Mairs Market Development
Owens Valley Growers Cooperative was founded in the fall of 2012. Our mission is to build a local, sustainable food system.
Through community education, support of local agriculture, and the development of local market outlets, we aim to increase access to healthy food choices, while developing enterprise for our local economy.
OVGC is excited to announce that we have the majority of funding in place to re-open the old Mairs Market in 2015 as a Bakery, Local Foods Cafe, and retail Food Cooperative.
Cooperative Model & Business Plan
OVGC has designed the Cooperative as a sustainable community asset, which provides healthy food choices for Southern Inyo County Residents and Tourists, and supports our local economy by sourcing agricultural and added value products from within the region.
OVGC has secured a long term lease of the Mairs building, including a purchase option should the building’s current owners decide to sell. The retail Food Cooperative will provide a full array of groceries at discounted prices for Co-op Members. The Co-op’s certified community kitchen will enable local production of healthy prepared food products, to be consumed inside the Co-op or taken home to enjoy. The kitchen will also host cooking classes using local seasonal foods.
While OVGC has received valuable start-up funding through public and private grants, the sustainability of our business plan relies on ongoing community participation through donated volunteer labor and Cooperative Memberships.

ART AT THE CO-OP
Recycled can art by Judyth Greenburgh, oils by Ruby Garcia who did our mural in the front.

We have another new art piece at the OVGC. A liminal print of the opening of the Co-op back in 2012 photographed by Lauren Bon and the Metabolic Studio's Optics division. Come visit to see this beautiful print in situ, and learn more about how the Metabolic Studio are contributing here in the Owens Valley. Ken is seen here putting the finishing touches on the frame, made from the wood of the oldest building in Lone Pine (1890)
